About Me

Hi,

I’m Ekpo Otu, a computer science university lecturer, researcher, and author | Expertise in Computer Vision, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. My current research interest and focus is computer vision and pattern recognition | where I apply both knowledge-based (handcrafted) and data-driven (machine learning) approaches to process and derive meaningful insights from large amount of datasets (structured and unstructured) – mainly 2D images and 3D meshes or point cloud.

I obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2021 from Aberystwyth University, Wales, United Kingdom; an M.Sc. in Computer and Network Engineering in 2013 from Sheffield Hallam University, England, United Kingdom; and a B.Sc. in Computer Science in 2008 from Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Calabar, Nigeria. I am excited to mention that all of my educational achievements from BSc to PhD have been on fully-funded study scholarship awards.

Currently, my main academic job involves research and teaching of core computer science and related subjects to university undergraduate students, including assessments, lab supervision, examination invigilation, project supervision, as well as providing support and mentorship to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have several years of teaching experience both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. In addition to teaching, I have, in the last 5 to 6 years, been actively involved in computer vision research with major recent contributions to the world-renowned Shape Retrieval Contest (SHREC), since 2020, published in top journals, including conferences attendance.

My other contributions to the body of knowledge in my field is the review support I provide to ELSEVIER Journal of Pattern Recognition, since July 2019. This has earned me some awards/recognition, as shown below.

When I have the time to spare, I typically would prefer to research and write about educational and funding opportunities for different levels of university education (undergraduates and postgraduates) | aimed at encouraging people, especially the younger generations, to see education as the best way to success.
